Yokohama WCS Postponed

The International Triathlon (ITU) today announced that the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Yokohama will not take place on 14 May 2011 as originally scheduled. The ITU is working with the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the City of Yokohama and the Japanese Triathlon Union (JTU) to find a suitable date for the event later in the 2011 schedule.

“We have been following the situation in Japan very closely and felt that once the Japanese Government raised the alert on the nuclear situation to the highest level of seven, it was too risky to stage an event there in May. The safety and health of our athletes, coaches, officials and staff should not be compromised,” said Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC Member. “We are in discussions to re-schedule it later in the season. Our thoughts and concerns are with the Japanese people as they recover from the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant situation.”

The 2011 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series kicked off on April 11 in Sydney, Australia. Canada’s Paula Findlay took the women’s title while Spain’s Javier Gomez won the men’s race. The next stop of the series will be in Madrid, Spain on June 4-5.

Brasil Fast

from former PTC member Cole Stewart's blog - nice work Cole!

Knowing the forth biggest television channel in the world is filming your race live for 20million people is pretty crazy. It didn't make it feel any less hard, if you were wondering. The travel to Brazil was a really cool experience for me and one that I know i'll remember, a big thanks to AP and Matt for that. The jungle and the whole country had a very pleasant vibe to it but brazil seemed a little less bit hospitable when both AP and Matt became extremely ill before the race. The 3 man team that would complete 3 super sprint triathlons on TV for canada took a major blow. Both men were hospitalized and managed to finish the swim leg of each race but were forced to pull out with vomiting during the race etc. My luck had been considerably better than Matt and AP's and I wasn't phased by any illness. So I did the race solo.

Canadian Rookie Paula Findlay Wins Gold in World Championship Triathlon Series Debut

July 24, 2010

LONDON, England—Canadian rookie Paula Findlay shocked the world by winning the gold medal in her first-ever World Championship Triathlon Series race on the Olympic course in London, England on Saturday.

“Oh my God this is so unbelievable,” beamed Findlay at the finish line. “I felt better than ever on the run today, and just kept pushing as hard as I could.”

Running on pure guts and bravery, the 21-year-old took on three of the world’s best triathletes who finished in the top-10 at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing. With just under one mile to go, the red-headed protégé threw down the gauntlet and the field could not respond.

Alexander Hinton and Joanna Brown Claim Gold in Quebec at Teck National Junior Series Triathlon Race

July 25, 2010

MAGOG, Que.—Alexander Hinton and Joanna Brown locked up their first victories of the season in the third leg of the men’s and women’s triathlon Teck National Junior Series races in Magog, Quebec on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Hinton rebounded after a slow start to the 750-metre swim to exit the water in fourth spot. Hinton had strong race tactics while working together with a group of four on the 20-kilometre bike portion of the race, before being caught by nearly 20 riders at the mid-way point on the bike. Exchanging leads through the second transition and into the 10-kilometre run, the Kingston, Ont. native put the hammer down on the field at the five-kilometre point, and ran to his first-ever title.

“It certainly feels good to get the win,” said Hinton who clocked a time of 58 minutes, 29 seconds. “I hadn’t raced in nearly a month and came so close to winning earlier this year in Coteau-du-Lac, so I am really happy I was able to win.”

Canadian Rookie Narrowly Misses Podium

DES MOINES, Iowa—Canada’s Paula Findlay proved once again she is ready to race against the world’s best triathletes after the rookie narrowly missed the podium in one of the most prestigious triathlon races of the season in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Edmonton native matched strides with three of the world’s powerhouses in the sport in the 10-kilometre run to finish fourth at the ITU Hy-Vee Triathlon Elite Cup with a time of one hour 59 minutes 54 seconds (1:59:54).

“I had no idea I could do this today. I’m still so surprised,” said Findlay, who earned $20,000 US for her performance. “I was racing girls that I am always watching on television and to be able to keep up with them is just amazing for me. The money is a nice little bonus, but I never even thought about it today.”

IXTAPA, Mex.—Canada’s next generation of triathletes proved they remain one of the strongest in the world after battling through blazing heat to rack up three medals at the PATCO Junior Continental Championships in Ixtapa, Mexico on Saturday.

With high surf pounding onto Mexico’s shores forcing organizers to change the event to a duathlon, the young Canucks took advantage of their running legs to win gold and bronze in the women’s event, and silver in the junior men’s race.

Team Canada Motto

from CBC website:

1. Team Canada's credo — Leave No Doubt

Below is the English version of the credo that adorned a wall in the Team Canada dressing room in Vancouver. There also was a French version. It was written by Canadian head coach Mike Babcock with help from a friend from their Saskatoon days, Rick Larsen. He runs the Chicago advertising firm Leo Burnett.

LEAVE NO DOUBT
That this is our game.
That this is our time.
That 14 days in February will be 2 weeks for the ages.
That every day counts.
That every meeting matters.
That every practice makes a difference.
That each one of us will rise to every occasion.
That this isn't about us, it's about our country.
That we know 33 million Canadians will attend every game.
That home ice is an advantage.
That nothing can distract us.
That nothing will stop us.
That our determination will define us.
That we are built to win.
That we are a team of character.
That we are a team of destiny.
So let the world be warned on February 28, 2010, we will …
LEAVE NO DOUBT

from the UK Telegraph:

Winter Olympics 2010: Team GB must copy Canada's 'Own the Podium' programme

The lesson is clear. London's Olympic chiefs must immediately go out and buy themselves a podium, put a 'Property of Team GB' sticker on it and surround it with barbed wire.
